In the early morning of March 9th, a gas leak outside of a business in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood caused a massive explosion that leveled three buildings, damaged 3 dozen more, and injured 9 firefighters.
Destroyed in the explosion was G&O Family Cyclery, the bike shop of our good friends Davey Oil and Tyler Gillies, and a pillar of the Seattle cycling community.
There truly is no bike shop like G&O; they are committed above all else to help families discover, try, and embrace family biking. Their commitment to families is so strong that their shop included a play area for children. And if you ever had the good fortune of meeting Davey and Tyler you know that they are two of the kindest and most approachable shop owners in the industry.
The explosion that destroyed their shop couldn’t have come at a worse time. Bike sales are seasonal, and spring is the busiest time of year- it’s what covers for the slow winter months. Add to that uncertainty about the timeliness of insurance coverage and the shop is at serious risk of closing down for good.
We can’t let this happen.
Join us in supporting Davey, Tyler and the brave car-free families of Seattle with a pledge to G&O’s GoFundMe campaign: https://www.gofundme.com/n7tmv4xg
They are very close to reaching their goal, but need this last little push to get them over the edge and ensure that their amazing business can survive.
Please donate whatever you can, every little bit counts.
The Bike Friday Team
P.S. Have a bike order with us in progress? Or thinking about buying a new bike? Donate up to $300 to G&O and we’ll take that off of your order. *Just make sure your donation is public so we can verify your support*

Bike Friday was honored June 12 by winning the Partnership Award at the Eugene Cascades & Coast/Travel Lane County Visitor Industry Celebration at the University of Oregon Ford Alumni Center.
Co-Founder Alan Scholz was on hand with his wife Teresa to receive the award, which was presented to a group, business or individual that has worked in partnership with other businesses and / or Travel Lane County to market Eugene, Cascades & Coast as a visitor destination.
Bike Friday was finalist along with the Oregon RV Alliance and the University of Oregon Marketing & Brand Management.
“Travel Lane County has done an amazing job for us,” said John Rezell, Bike Friday Special Projects Manager. “From directing tour groups to visit our factory to taking our Bike Fridays to conventions and events as a representation of what we produce in Lane County, the entire staff has been wonderful in working with us. Without question one of the key elements of our 20th Anniversary is celebrating our roots in Oregon.
Bike Fridays have been made exclusively in Oregon since 1992. Why?
Well, nearly 20 years before he started building Bike Fridays here, Alan Scholz visited Oregon and fell in love. Hey, it’s easy to do.
A few years later, he moved here. And the rest is our history.
But what Oregon has to offer, especially to cyclists, is nothing short of amazing.
Our friends at Travel Oregon have been busy this year supporting that.
One of their great efforts is the website RideOregonRide.com. If you want to find the best places to ride, it is one great stop.
Today they are launching their new mobile website that will allow you to use a smartphone to access key information, including maps and routes and other great stuff.
Think about it. You’re out there, riding, and wondering how to get back? As long as you have cell reception, you can find your way. Check it out!

Do you have the itch to ride?
Come visit us at the Seattle Bike Expo this weekend, Saturday and Sunday.
We’re driving up Friday with our Carbon Drive tikit, the Future’s tikit, the 20th Anniversary New World Tourist and our line of Select models. All will be available for test rides.
If you ride your Bike Friday to the event, mention the password 20th Anniversary to the Bike Valet, and we’ll pick up your tab (a donation to Bike Works).
Come on, why not? You get a whole extra hour on Sunday when we change the clocks. Use it wisely!

The March/April issue of Momentum magazine just hit our mailbox, and it has a review of the 1st Class tikit.
Reviewer Gwendal Castellan wrote:
“Riding the tikit felt fast and zippy, the core of the frame is incredibly stiff and responsive. All the flex of the bike was in the seat post and the head post, which smoothed out the bumps in the road. The tikit was one of the faster folding bikes that I have tested. The Nexus eight-speed hub was problem-free and provided a broad range of speeds that met the needs of riding in a hilly city.”
The 1st Class tikit was our 2011 tikit with the Select Group. This year’s 2012 tikit with the Select Group is the Future’s tikit with belt drive technology,

If you speak French, you’ll find this more interesting. If you don’t speak French, hey, it’s still a nice-looking ride!
