Innovation and design are critical to success in the dynamic world of cycling, and Bike Friday is proud to launch a breakaway.
Introducing the newest Bike Friday, Silk.
Co-Founder Alan Scholz and engineer Rob English collaborated to bring the super popular Gates Belt Drive Technology to Bike Friday's 20-inch bikes.
Customers have been asking us to create a 20-inch Bike Friday with the smooth, quiet and clean ride they have come to know on our Belt Drive tikits.
The new frame design allows the Gates Belt Drive System to maintain its proper tension in and out of our tried and true fold.
The Silk is made possible by a special Ratcheting Adjustable Dropout technology (RAD)(patent applied), which allows for incremental chain stay length without the possibility of slipping out of adjustment.
It is completely modular so it can adapt to any type of drivetrain.
The belt drive on the 20-inch wheels offers a much better gear range than it does on our 16-inch tikit, something many have requested.
Silk also takes all the new hub drives that have become available in the last few years along with any derailleur system and makes them available on a core style Pocket Bike Friday, whether it be touring, commuter, road or mountain.
Recently one of our dealers, Geoffrey D. Smith of BikePartners.net in Santa Rosa, CA got a chance to ride Silk. He came away impressed.
"Riding the Silk is effortless, quiet, responsive -- as though the bike is an extension of one's self," he said. "The 62 cm frame size was particularly well-suited to my 6-foot-4, 230-pound body."
Silk can be configured with the handlebars and gearing to fit your needs. It comes with 406 or 451 wheels, and in sizes ranging from 48 cm to 62 cm.
As our Introduction, we are making pre-orders of Belt Drive versions of Silk available for February 2013 delivery at introductory savings.
You can choose from three basic versions of Silk, with all available on 406 or 451 wheels, and customize your Bike Friday from there:
Silk 8.0:/ Gates CenterTrack Carbon Belt System with Shimano Alfine 8-speed internal hub, Avid disc brakes, sealed bottom bracket, threadless headset and flat bars.
Silk Infinity:/ Gates CenterTrack Belt System with NuVinci N360 internal hub [IN PHOTO, RIGHT], Avid disc brakes, sealed bottom bracket, threadless headset and flat bars.
Silk 11.0:/ Gates CenterTrack Belt System with Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal hub, Avid disc brakes, Chris King headset, Thomson Elite seat post, FSA Gossamer cranks and drop bars.
NOTE: Silk with Alfine 8 begins at $1998. Silk with NuVinci begins at $2250. Silk with Alfine 11 begins at $2498.
The Bike Friday Silk can fold and fit into a Samsonite Suitcase for Airline Travel. Its frame is guaranteed for life, and each Silk will be hand-built to fit an individual's body.
In addition, the new design makes for a smoother, easier fold [see video] for our 20-inch Bike Fridays with no chance of the Belt Drive falling off during the fold!
