Handlebars need to be in the right place in front of you. The stem riser allows us to do that in a way other bikes simply can't
The seat mast size is independent of the Top Tube on Bike Fridays unlike other bikes. This means a Bike Friday can be made to fit you better than a stock frame can ever adjust too.

Handlebars are an imporant first choice. This is where the layout of your brake and shift controls are. Plus hand comfort starts here. Multiposition bars will help a lot on longer rides.
One of the 3 important places your body touches the bike.
The stem attaches the handle bars to your bike. They come in different lengths. We usually choose the right length for you from your sizing information.
One of your set of controls. Controls the gear you want to be in to ride with the most comfortable and effective cadence.
Your very important controls for controlling your stopping. The bars you choose determine the type of brake levers that will work with them.
The main bearing where your cranks and pedals attach. All your measurements to fit your bike properly are in relation to this bearing also. Lighter is often better but more expensive too.
This is where you supply the GO! to your bike. Your pedals turn on them. They are best in proportion to your leg length. We supply choices. Not everyone does!
All those small cogs in the back of a bike that make the modern multispeed bike possible. The chain runs on them and shifts on the ones that have a cassette of gears with a derailleur mechanism.
Modern chains are much narrower & match the cassette. A plated chain is better as it helps to avoid rusting. They are good for about 1500 to 3000 miles.
The derail in French is derailleur. Is the one that makes the chain move back and forth on the big rings up front.
To derail as to take a train off its track. On this bike you have 8,9,10 or 11 little cogs in the back. The de-rail-er moves your chain magically back and forth when you move the shifters on your handlebars.
Your bike has 5 important sets of bearings to make it run smooth. This is the front one that holds all those spokes together from the rim where that important front tire is.
The rear hub does several things, it attaches all the rear spokes to your pedaling through the pedals, cranks, chain & then cassette that is on the rear hub.
Rims are important to a good wheel for strength, good braking, and light efficient ride.
We use Stainless Steel slpokes. Your wheels quality is determined by the materials and build skills. Only the chain has more pieces on your bike.
20" tires on Bike Fridays are not children's tires. The right tire is available for the use and road surface you plan for. We can recommend if you need more input.
The secret to pnuematic tires. Air! Inner tubes are available in 2 valve types. Standard Schrader valves like on a car or French Presta which are easier to pump up by hand & many cyclists prefer. Choose a width to match the tire you choose.
Headset does not explain it well. It is that very important bearing that steers the front wheel. Fits into the part of the main frame called the Head tube!
Brakes are important. They come in 4 main types. Dual Pivot rim brake for road bike, 'V' & Canti rim brake for touring and mountain, disc brakes which are showing up on a lot of different bikes & the so called coaster brake that is still a very simple but effective brake in some hub gear style rear hubs. All work pretty well for their intended use. But some are more appropriate for some uses, lighter or of course more expensive than others.
Modern seat posts allow you to fine adjust the angle on your saddle and its fore and aft position. Extremely important to fine tune for your best comfort.
The third and most think the most important spot where you touch your bike. Do not choose a bike by its saddle. Spend time trying saddles to get one that fits. Price and weight do not predict comfort.
Pedals are one of the 3 important places you touch your bike and where you apply the power. A simple pedal is fine for simple riding but if you tour or sport ride you will want a pedal & shoe system to match. This improves power, comfort, and safety. This is why we do not choose your pedals for you.

Slightly FORWARD body angle, with bars about LEVEL with the saddle.
More FORWARD body angle with bars BELOW the saddle.(1-3" or 2.5-7.5cm below saddle.)
VERY FORWARD flat-back type position. Must complete sizing A-F below.
