Cargo Bikes / Haul-a-Day

A Kickstarter Success!

When Bike Friday Co-Founder Alan Scholz and Kidical Mass Co-Founder Shane MacRhodes put their heads together to come up with the perfect versatile bike for a Safe Routes to School class leader, the Bike Friday Haul-a-Day was born.

The Haul-a-Day is set up for the ultimate in convenience.

  • Frame adjusts to riders 4-foot to 6-foot-7 (1.2 m to 2.0 m)
  • Starting weight just 33 pounds
  • Low step-over height
  • Big load capacity, low center of gravity
  • Light and agile, rides like a real bike
  • Made in the USA

The Haul-a-Day quickly earned a reputation as a great Family Bike as word spread quickly through Social Media by mothers and fathers that the Haul-a-Day delivered a great ride.

In December 2014, we launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help fund and accelerate the research and development of the Haul-a-Day.

We raised three times our initial goal of $45,000, which allowed us to introduce the BionX electric pedal assist as an option in early 2015.

Keep the family in mind

Shane is father of three toddlers in a car-less family, and provided insight into the elements that young families search for in Cargo Bikes.

The Haul-a-Day offers unprecedented versatility because it utilizes Bike Friday's OSATA [One Size Adjusts To All] design, which allows its frame to adjust to fit riders 4-foot to 6-foot-7 (1.2 m to 2.0 m).

Parents can take turns riding the same bike in the morning taking kids to school as well as riding it in the afternoon bringing home supplies from the hardware or grocery store.

What sets the Haul-a-Day apart, aside from it being a Made in USA product, is its 20-inch wheel design.

The smaller wheels are stronger to handle heavy loads, and it provides a lower center of gravity as well as an easy step-over height to make it easier to handle when starting and stopping.

With the Haul-a-Day 8-10 inches shorter than most Cargo Bikes, the result is ease of handling.

The Haul-a-Day really shines in its ride. The Haul-a-Day is light and agile, and rides like a performance bike -- the calling card of all Bike Fridays.

Built for you

Alan invented the Burley Trailer in the 1970s to cart around his daughter, Hanna. He later created the Family Tandem to ride with his daughter, Sarah.

Alan sees the Haul-a-Day as a modern extension of his Burley Trailer.

"If I had all the tools and technology we have today back then, I would have created a Cargo Bike instead of the trailer," Alan says. "It's much more versatile."

Since it is a custom built bike, each Haul-a-Day can be configured to meet the individual needs of your family. It is compatible with many Cargo Bike add-ons and accessories already on the market.

Like all Bike Fridays, the Haul-a-Day is made with standard bike components that can be purchased and serviced at any competent bike shop.
