UNITED Airlines Fees

I had read some instances of folks with folders being charged a bicycle fee.
Some airlines, like American and Southwest, are pretty clear that our
Friday's in hard cases travel as luggage, rather than as an extra charge bike.
United was unclear. Here for the record is their policy, was to me by the
customer relations folks. I'm going to tape a copy in my Friday case, right
next to the 8X10 picture of how a packed Friday is supposed to look -- that
is, the before-TSA arrangement.

Dear Mr. Day:
Thank you for contacting us. You wrote that you have a folding bike
that fits in a standard suitcase and wanted to know if there would be
any additional cost for you to bring it with you on a trip. Since it
fits into a suitcase, you would not be subject to any additional fees.
The additional fee is applicable to conventional bikes because there is
special handling involved with them. Since yours fits into a suitcase,
it would be handled like any other piece of baggage.
We appreciate this opportunity to respond and look forward to serving
you again.
Regards,
D.S. Allen

I am planning a trip. I want to bring my Bike Friday, a folding bike
that fits in a standard Sampsonite suitcase. American Airlines states
that such an arrangement qualifies as a no-cost checked bag so long as
it is less than 62" and 50 lbs or less. Does United follow this policy? Your
answer will help me decide whether to fly UA or AA, since my bike
is a big part of my recreational travel. Thanks.
