I wasn't a cyclist until in my 40's when I decided to take the plunge and bought a SatRDay recumbent. At the time I was teaching Japanese at the U of Oregon and driving 1.2 miles each way to work. Commuting by bike never occured to me. When I got a research grant to go to Japan, I took along my SatRDay and toured Hokkaido, Mt. Fuji and Tokyo and loved every minute of it! I also rode with many passionate Bike Friday riders in Japan.

When I became “Bike Friday's ambassador to Asia” in 2003, I got a Pocket Crusoe for commuting and then a Pocket Rocket Pro to keep up with the BF lunch ride (Every weekday at 12:00--join us!) and club rides. To meet Green Gear Cycling's challenge to "get to work under your own power," now I commute 10 miles (when it's not raining ^_^) on my new 9-speed Express tikit!

JAPAN CYCLE TOURS
Many Bike Friday riders want to tour Japan, but hesitate because of the language/logistics. Being fluent in Japanese, I started leading cycle tours for 'little wheels' (big wheels welcome!) In July 2006, ten BF riders from the U.S. and Australia toured the north island of Hokkaido and Tokyo. In 2007 we explored Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto and Nara and rode with Japanese Bike Friday riders.
