They patiently listen to people all over the world via phone, email, fax and even snailmail, helping them to design their perfect Bike Friday. "We listen to hundreds of permutations of 'I like to ride fast' 'I want to carry camping gear' 'I want to keep up with my friends' 'I only want to spend $X' 'I get pain in my right shoulder' and so on every day," says sales expert Dave Seybert. "We take these individual needs and concerns and guide the buyer thoroughly through the process." From headset to toeclip, you could say. The set of world-time clocks on the salesroom wall shows the best time the team can reach people in Boston, Dallas, Denver, Alaska, Japan, Australia, Amsterdam, London, Germany - a testament to how we strive to make ordering a Bike Friday as convenient as possible. What kinds of things might callers do to get the best out of their chosen expert? "Think about what you really want the bike to do 90% of the time," says Dave Seybert, a father of two with years of all-round cycling experience alone and on tandems with the family. "I would be happy to design the travel bike of your dreams," says Kurt Christensen, who owned a bike shop in Oregon for 11 years and is very aware of the needs of cyclists of all styles and backgrounds. Kurt rides a Pocket Rocket Pro. "What's your budget?" says Peter Berra, who handles rapidly growing base of Australian sales and whose emails full of useful links are legendary. "We're not going to over or undersell you - we're going to design a bike that really works for you at precisely what you are happy to pay." Peter rides four Bike Fridays that he built himself. "I use a two pronged approach," says Walter Lapchynski, a multi-talented Bike Friday person with hands-on work experience in all facets of the company - inventory, customer service, production, final assembly and now sales. He's also a self-confessed 'fixed-gear freak' with his own cycling blog. "I want to know things like how fast, how far, how much weight, how high, over what surfaces, and similar conditional variables. Then I want to know what expectations you have of your new Bike Friday, such as intended budget. I weigh in both prongs of data to arrive at the design that best fits both needs." Walter rides a fixed gear Pocket Rocket Pro and a Pocket Llama, his wife has a Pocket Crusoe and he's working on a Tandem Triple XL for his family." "Just talk to me, give me your thoughts and ideas, your goals if you know them, so I can understand your particular cycling needs," says Steve Strickland, team leader and die-hard mountain biker, who nonetheless has a varied background in cycling including extensive touring and road riding experience. A lot of busy people appreciate Steve's no-nonsense efficiency and fast, precise judgement. Steve rides a Pocket Rocket Pro and a New World Tourist.
