=v= I took some pictures of Bike Friday Club of New York's
April 30th ride to Roosevelt Island, which was led by Dave
Holowka. Dave showed up on his Brompton, and I was on a rusty
old one-gear Italian "Safari" folder. (My own trusty-not-rusty
Air Glide was, alas, in another, hillier city.) Everyone else
had Bike Fridays, thank goodness, and we rode over to the "ski
lift" tram that goes to Roosevelt Island:

=v= Roosevelt Island is unlike most of NYC, because it's all
modern architecture. This is not your typical biking-in-NYC
street scene:

=v= At the northern tip of the island is Lighthouse Park, with a
view of Queens:

=v= From there we headed south on the Manhattan side of the
island. Lye and I were lagging behind, and I spotted some Tom
Otterness sculptures in the water, so I stopped to take photos:

I checked out the artists' website and found that these were
part of an exhibition called "The Marriage of Real Estate and
Money." More photos here:

=v= But back to the ride. We went all the way south, past
an older hospital and what's left of an even older smallpox
hospital, and none of my photos of that came out. But then
we made it to the southern tip of the island:

There we pointed south to show Lynette where Brooklyn is.
=v= Then we took the little bridge over to Queens, where food is
not served, then took the Queensboro Bridge back to Manhattan.
Lye brought us to an excellent Indian restaurant in Murray Hill,
and that was our ride!
