Enjoyed the write-up
I enjoyed your daily writeups in Bike
Friday's 77 member ride across Oregon. One line
caught my special attention, to the effect
"everyone
wants to be an individual, but everyone wants to
belong." Some years ago I read a book where the
author
said that your sentiment speaks of a "natural
guilt"
having nothing to do with religion as such - the
conflicted stance of supremely needing to be an
individual at the same time needing to be part of
something much bigger than our lonely individual
selves. We want it both ways, and that's conflict!
On a different subject - having built various
recumbent bikes for my own use for twenty some
years
(Easy Racer, Don Harse Lowrider and Vision models)
last summer I contacted Greenspeed and ended
building
my own Greenspeed trike, using their plans and
some
of their parts. It has retired my other recumbents
and provides me with daily transportation (going
into
my 81st year of life). I suspect that Greenspeeds
are fairly common in Australia. Hans helped me
back
in 1991 in building a detachable passenger-powered
sidecar for my Lowrider (the year we lived in
Eugene).
Thanks for your fascinating, scintillating
account
of Cycle Oregon '03!
