WE KNOW there are some arty folk in our 11,000 strong BF community.

One such person right here in our own backyard is Herman Krieger, a Sat R Day owner living here in Eugene, Oregon.

Photographer and Sat R Day owner, Herman Krieger

Herman is originally from Holland, and is currently exhibiting work at the local Mayor's Art Show in downtown Eugene. For me, his black and white photos have a wonderful quirkiness and the clarity of a visual documentor who sees intrigue, pathos, subterfuge, peace, resignation... in seemingly the blandest of subjects, like stripmalls and sidewalks and, well, you name it.

Herman first appeared at our First Sunday of the Month rides. We displayed some of his work in the showroom to give visitors something else interesting to look at besides folding bikes.

His series Churches Ad Hoc is an exercise in caption cleverness, and even has the blessing of the theological community, judging from the comments in the guest book.

His latest series is Hamlets of Lane County. But if you want to get a good gander at Bike Friday's neighbors and where we hang out when not on the BF lunch ride, take a look at the series Along West 11th Avenue. My eyes have certainly opened wider thanks to his evocative imagery. I'll never look at Dunkin' Donuts with the same jadedness again. In fact, I am thinking of adding color to my life by getting a pair of monochrome glasses to put on each day before I set foot outside the door and switching to a black & white TV...

Does a recumbent make you see things differently to a regular upright bike? Yes, you can actually SEE things I hear all the recumbent riders chorus, leaping from their temperfoam and slung thrones-in-motion. I do notice that there are very few shots of handlebars and pavement closeups in Herman's gallery...

Skit Row: One of my favorites from the "Along West 11th" series.

We just got word from Herman:

"The Oregon Art Beat" show featuring the photo essay, "Hamlets of Lane County", and me on the Sat R Day, will be shown after the beginning of next year. I tried taking photos with a digital camera while riding the bike, but the only thing that stood out in the photos were my feet! Herman [We're looking forward to that series ... - Ed]. *UPDATE* See below for stills from the show!
