Beyond 50? Over the hill and yet pedaling a folding bicycle like a Betsy Schwartz, Dick and Ingrid Adams, and the incredible folk we saw spurning the sag wagon on Cycle Oregon 2003?
Here's a fabulous chance to speak about what you do on your Friday, your brilliant beyond-50 life and inspiring thousands of folks your age to follow in your slipstream - even if it is just in their dreams.
Being a bit of a sucker for writing contests, but rarely entering or winning them, I submitted a 100-word essay about my favorite inspirational woman to a contest which, as it turned out, was run by Portland Station 800 AM/KPDQ. The station has a program every Saturday at 5pm called Beyond 50. I didn't know until later it was only for folks beyond 50 (I am only 9 years off), but in true northwest inclusive style, I was somehow not disqualified!
I won the contest (I think the 50+ year-youngs were too busy out living life to the fullest to stop and enter) and got chatting with the show host, Joy Ramos. Now she'd like to feature some of YOU adventurous spirits on her show. Over to Joy Ramos:
A new radio program called "Beyond 50" that promotes the active elder lifestyle would like to feature on the air, live, an elder bike-woman (who is 50 or older) to tell us about her passion for biking regularly and any interesting stories about your voyages. This special program will air on Saturday, May 8 on 800 AM/KPDQ at 5 p.m. The broadcast range of the radio station reaches as far north as Fairview, Washington and as far south as Salem, Oregon. The majority of listeners are in the Portland metropolitan area. Feel free to give us a call at (503) 653-0039 or send an email to joy at beyond50radio dot com
Joy says that if no-one responds she'll feature me - and with 9 years to go, that will not do!
If you go on the show, I shall make you a stunning 11 x 17 glossy full color poster of yourself on your Friday - to take a look at one, click here. You'll have to send me your photo, and a short transcript of your interview.
If all goes well I hope Joy will regularly feature Bike Friday owners on the show.
Contact Joy now... 5-4-3-2-1... you're on air!
PS: To those who want to know who I wrote about in the contest, read about Alison in my Ireland story.
