*NEW* Twin Air Q - the first of the Twin Air Q Tandems - the tandem which becomes a SINGLE BIKE - rolls off the line (September 2003)
The tandem that James Bond would ride if he could afford it (and if he could convince a Bond gal to do some alternative heavy breathing) is now within reach of mere mortals.
Last year we took Hanz's personal TwinAir tandem to the New York Bike Ride where it caused quite a sensation.
And for some glowing history, in 1999 Alan Scholz and Jeff Linder took the Yellow Jerseys in the Burley Duet Tandem Stage Race, winning overall in their class.
The new Production Twin Air tandem made its debut in June 2003. The differences? Around .5 - 1 lb lighter, with welded 'webbed' sections instead of the painstakingly hand-filleted and brazed work that was formerly done by Hanz himself. The result is a bike that is no less pretty, and more affordable, starting at around $5,500. The Twin Air is bike that disassembles and packs in a single suitcase, rather than being a folding bike like many other Bike Friday models including the Tandem Twosday.
There are only 7 Hanz Scholz Signature Twin Air tandems in the world. Now, with this new production model, there's bound to be more.
"Rides just like a single bike" says BF Sales Consultant Tim Link, who admits to being a die-hard Bianchi fancier as well as owning a BF. I was in fact the stoker on that particular ride, and when we hit a five-mile gravel stretch at a constant 25 mph I did not reach for the parachute but continued touching up my nail polish.
The following photo shows the new welded part:

Take a look at these sneak-peek Quicktime movies to get the inside scoop on this landmark BF model:

Movie 2(1.5Mb) Michael Kelly, Sales Manager, talking about it, and Jim Haskell, Production Manager, packing it.
Here's a Photo Gallery of a touring Twin Air being packed.
