UPDATE Sep 28, 2005: And .. here it is!
UPDATE Aug 24, 2005: Sneak peek ... shhhh!
UPDATE July 20, 2005: New Sat R Day almost ready to roll!
A different kind of Bike Friday was seen being wheeled out of the factory for a test ride. Yes, it's the prototype new Bike Friday 20" wheel recumbent. Fully foldable and packable of course. Here are the details so far:
"We are going to have 2 models. A Touring version with 406 wheels and a Sport version with 451 wheels. Both versions are above seat steering only. They both fold up and fit into a suitcase like all other Bike Fridays. We will tell you when you can order the bike as things progress. Meanwhile, we welcome suggestions for names for the two different models (touring and sport). Thanks, Hanna Scholz, Marketing Director".
Existing SatRDays will of course, continue to be supported. What, you think Bike Friday would abandon you? We're not just ANY bike company, y'know!
Got an idea for a name?
Paul Moore, one of the original Bike Friday supporters, came up with the names 'Green Gear' and 'Bike Friday'. Read about the Classic Friday.
Now it's your turn! Send an email to lynettec@bikefriday.com with the new Recumbent names in SEPARATE emails with the Subject line like this:
406 Recumbent name: xxxxxxxxx
451 Recumbent name: xxxxxxxxx
or just vote on the ones you see below.
Alan Scholz, being a bit of a "name lab" himself, has come up with most of the thought starters below. Some are potential names, some are just brainstorming phrases. Go for it, and thanks for your help. News as it unfolds (ka-boom!) will be posted right at this easy-to-tell-someone link, http://www.bikefriday.com/bf/newsatrday

MAKE WAY FOR THE NEW SAT R DAY

Ye olde favorite - Some of the most interesting people ride a Sat R Day. Local Eugene photographer Herman Krieger rolls by the Bike Friday factory regularly on his Sat R Day. Here he is chatting to salesguy Walter Lapchynski.
First, the good news.
In response to many suggestions as to ways to improve the Sat R Day - still the only true suitcase folding recumbent - we're pleased to announce a new sportier, lighter Sat R Day is slated for 2005.
Right now we're temporarily suspending production on the current model while Hanz completes the prototyping on a new and improved Sat R Day 406/451 model. The new model will be lighter, and easier to fold and pack.
The seat will be located closer to the ground for easier starting and stopping, and to fit shorter riders better.
The position on the bike will be more adjustable than before. In addition, the new model will feature 20-inch rather than 16-inch wheels, which will allow better gearing and make finding replacement tires easier.
We plan to release the new, improved, sportier Sat R Day the first quarter of 2005. Putting the current bike on hold was the only way Hanz could find the time and resources necessary to make this upgraded machine available. It'll be worth the wait!
OK, now for the not-so-good news.
The DoubleDay Recumbent Tandem has been discontinued.
This brilliantly fun machine is well loved by current owners, but unfortunately we don't sell enough of them to make it a viable part of the models offered. Yes, it's a Cadillac of bicycles, and requires a lot of loving hands to bring to life! The low volume has kept us from reaching a profitable scale to offer this model at a reasonable price.
Discontinuing the Doubleday will free up resources for us to improve the the Sat R Day, which is more popular anyway. Of course we will continue to support the DoubleDay for all those people who currently have them.
That's the Bike Friday way ...
