Special Guest Judge Maynard Hershon picks the winners

Maynard Hershon
We let distinguished cycling writer Maynard Hershon be the judge

THANK YOU to all the Friday scribblers who submitted a 'What Do I Do On a Friday?' story for our 2007 Bike Friday Homecoming/Cycle Oregon Story Contest. We received around 20 entries, and were hoping for a few more - clearly your Fridays are not languishing in their suitcases and you're out riding, a good sign!

The stories were diverse, articulate and passionate, ranging from conquering personal health issues and inner demons to the far reaches of human endurance and adventure.

At Bike Friday we all had different opinions on which we liked best, so decided to invite distinguished cycling writer Maynard Hershon to make the call. Here are his picks and why:

Andrew Black (Portland, OR, Air Friday), for 'Cycling Cape Wrath on a Friday'
"My favorite. It's sentimental, it's small-wheel-centric, it's full of adventure - and it's killer well written!"
Read Andrew's winning story

Audrey Medina (Sacramento, CA, Pocket Crusoe), for 'Breaking Away: El Tour de Tucson on a Friday'
"I liked it because she didn't lament her slowness but did wax glowingly about the accessibility and friendliness of BFers. And I liked the way she described the "zone" she fell into as she pedaled around Tucson."
Read Audrey's winning story

RUNNER UP: A special mention goes to Noah Jacobs, for 'A Bike for all Reasons: Even traveling to work is fun on a Friday'
"I liked this story because he mentions that life goes on after you get home from your exotic holiday abroad. That there are another 11 1/2 months in the year ... when you can actually ride a @#$% bicycle!" Read Noah's winning story
CONGRATULATIONS! Andrew and Audrey each win a week-long Cycle Oregon Tour valued at $799. Noah Jacobs wins a copy of the PACTOUR/Galfromdownunder DVD 16,000 Feet on a Friday.

MAYNARD says ...

I was shanghaied to judge this contest. Reading the entries was easy and fun, but choosing losers was not. Only two writers could win from more than ten times that many entries. Like several of our rider/writers, I like Bike Friday people, and I do not like to separate them or judge them - even when the rules demand that I do. If I may be pardoned for the cliche, you are all winners, this contest notwithstanding. - Maynard Hershon, Bike Friday Club of Denver co-leader

We're forward to riding with 100+ Bike Friday folks on Cycle Oregon 2007. We'll be having a story telling night where entrants will be able to read their stories by the light of the silvery moon - assuming it doesn't rain. See you there!
