From Ken Kifer's Bike Pages: In 1961, the Velo Sport Newsletter was published in the Bay Area in California. It was eight pages long, run off on a mimeograph machine by Peter Rich, the owner of a bike shop with the same name as the newsletter. Who would have dreamed that it would eventually become a major magazine?

The Berkeley Bicycle Club traces its roots back to 1959 when America's idea of racing bikes was kids on Schwinn beach cruisers with tassels in the handle-bars. Peter Rich decided to bring European style bike racing to the U.S. The first thing the country needed was a good bike club, so Peter founded Velo Club Berkeley (in Peter's mother's Kitchen, according to legend).
