A Happy Inauguration Day Postcard from Jakarta: On last Sunday, we had Bike Friday gathering to take picture on SD* Besuki Menteng, Obama's Elementary school, and same time established the Bike Friday Club of Indonesia. It was a special day for students of Obama’s former school SDN Menteng 01, Central Jakarta, who gathered at the school’s hall to watch the final results pour in. Several pictures of Obama during his school years there were prominently displayed ... Obama, or Barry as he was affectionately called during his time in Indonesia, enrolled in the school — then named SD Besuki — as a third-grader in 1968. He previously attended the Fransiskus Asisi Catholic School, also in Central Jakarta. Well Iwan, we'll try to figure out how we might get your photo onto the Obamas' mantelpiece ... perhaps we can convince him to trade his presidential limo for a tikit®. Can you just see him tooling around the White House grounds on tikit® trailed by his minders (also on tikit®s?) Perhaps we'll see him riding a patriotic tikit® just like the ecologically-minded Senator Peter deFazio in Washington DC. These photos remind us of a time when kids rode to and from school, before the advent of the SUV and when the world seemed a safe place. Perhaps, a small wheeled, human-scale bicycle can reverse the tide, and take us back there.
