I started my assault of the Haleakala Crater in Paia near the ocean in Maui at 08:26 am on November 30th and arrived at the crater at the top 5 hours 23 minutes later, climbed just over 10,000 feet on my trusty Pocket Rocket Pro which is over 10 years old.

Weather was ideal with a slight tail wind most of the way. Did this 3 days after my 71st birthday and felt really good about my achievement until I ran into another gentlemen at the top who told me that he had climbed it twice in one day after his fellow cyclists in his club dared him to do it.

He is 78 years old!!

My bike Friday performed well and at times I wished I had a smaller cassette in the back for the relentless 5-8% grade all the way up. My wife picked me up at the top and we rode home for afternoon cocktails to celebrate.
