Fun and frolics downunder

At the 6th annual Australian Bike Friday Club Saturday night dinner in rural Mudgee in New South Wales, the ABFC people were given a chance to do some creative writing. In fact, it was only the last line of a limerick which was required. They came up with some interesting remarks.

The original was:

There once were some brothers called Scholz Quite expert with spanners and boltz Inventing Bike Fridays Allowing us fly days They never made any with foltz.

There once were some cyclists on small wheels Who ate quite prodigiously large meals When gathered at Mudgee They grew very pudgee dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah.

The winning line, written by Des Butler who won a BF tee shirt, was

Their tight nicks provoking loud squeals.

There were various other prizes including sample sunscreens for children with the reddest and pinkest noses; a toothbrush for the child with the biggest smile; some (United Airlines) socks for the one (a teenager) with the smelliest feet; a pair of tandem badges for the one with the newest BF, wich was a Tandem XL; a bottle of wine for a local man who took the lead for one of the rides; a BF cap for the Master of Ceremonies who did a stirling job, including auctioning off a BF shirt which had been found left in the laundry; a tee shirt for the child who travelled furthest (9 year old David van Hoesen who came with his father Derek from the USA); various lucky number prizes of donated wine, pens/biros for all the children and adults from Bike Friday, rulers with bicycle designs for all the kids, a BF tee shirt as a reward for Nicholas Clark's honesty in recounting how he got his BF from a man who had stolen it [Wow, we'd love to hear details of that one, Ed], two BF shirts for Bronwyn Laing and Dave Boyling for all their help with the Mudgee weekend, two prizes for the man and woman who spotted the spelling error on the new BF shirts [Are you talking aboout Austrailia spelled wrong? Now Margaret, don't be like that-Ed], and so on. Glenys (Willie) Wilson entertained us with her singing and Nic Gellie played his mandolin. All the grandfathers and prospective grandfathers received a special poster of old men on old bikes, to keep them pedaling.

We had perfect weather, great food, and wonderful rides among the vineyards and bush surrounding Mudgee. Seventy people including nine children were there, as well as two New Zealanders who came to ride with us.

The new Australian Bike Friday Club banner was stretched over the community area where we met to watch Hanz Scholz do packing and folding demos. The Project Q was sold a few hours after Hanz showed its versatility as a single or a tandem. Eyes popped as he packed it into one case. In fact several people were queueing up to buy it. Is that why it is called a Q?

The next ABFC weekend will be in Kangaroo Valley, NSW, 12 to 13 October 2002. Then the 7th annual ABFC fun will be celebrated on 27 to 30 March 2003. Note the date now and be sure to join us. Enquiries mday@picknowl.com.au.
